Motor insurance premiums to double for motorists speeders

Motorists convicted of speeding could see the cost of their motor insurance premiums almost double according to research by moneysupermarket.com, which also reveals the UK’s worst speeding culprits*. The price comparison site analysed almost three million motor insurance quotes over a year from motorists with driving convictions. It reveals boy racers in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, are the worst offenders – with over half (54 per cent) of all the speeding convictions in the G62 postcode area belonging to the male drivers aged 17-21. Car insurance premiums could rise by 15% in 2010

A 2009 rise of almost 20% in car insurance premiums could be followed by a further hike of 15% in 2010, according to Consumer Intelligence. The market research firm puts the current average annual car insurance premium at £564.19, with 17 to 24-year-olds bearing the brunt of last year’s increase, at almost 25%. For this age group a typical annual premium stands at £1,489 while for the 65s and over the rise has been around 15% to £423. Employers are putting their workers at risk of driving without insurance by encouraging them to use their cars for work but not warning them of the need for business use cover on their car insurance. According to new research by insurance comparison site Gocompare.com, 72% of UK workers have used their own car for business use in the last year but 35% of UK workers do not have business use cover on their car insurance. Car insurance premiums soared by nearly 20% during 2009 as the UK’s growing compensation culture pushed up insurers’ costs, research has shown.
