EHIC special report – Requirements for the European Health Insurance Card

To apply for an EHIC you will need to provide your name, date of birth and NHS or National Insurance number. In Scotland the NHS number is known as the Community Health Index or CHI number and in Northern Ireland it is known as the Health and Care number. There are several ways to apply for an EHIC but the quickest way is to apply online.  Your card will normally arrive within seven days. You can also apply by phone on 0845 606 2030 or by post using an application form available from your local post office. Your application can be just for yourself, but you can also apply on behalf of your partner and any children in full-time education under the age of 18.
